Our Principles
The following principles guide the work of the Nunavik Marine Region Planning Commission (NMRPC), including the development and implementation of the Marine Use Plan:
- People are a functional part of the environment and marine uses cannot be planned and managed without reference to the human community, therefore, social, cultural and economic activities of the human community must be central to marine planning and implementation.
- The primary purpose of marine planning in the Nunavik Marine Region is to protect and promote the existing and future wellbeing of individuals and communities in or using the Nunavik Marine Region. While the interests of all Canadians are considered, special attention is devoted to protecting and promoting the existing and future wellbeing of Nunavik Inuit and Nunavik Inuit lands and waters.
- The planning process ensures the Marine Use Plan reflects the priorities and values of the residents and users of the Nunavik Marine Region’s planning regions.
- The marine planning process provides an opportunity for the active and informed participation and support of Nunavik Inuit and other residents or users affected by the Marine Use Plan. Participation is promoted through various means, including ready access to all relevant materials, appropriate and realistic schedules, as well as recruitment and training of local Nunavik Inuit and other local residents and users to participate in the planning process.
- The Marine Use Plan provides for the conservation, development, and use of lands and waters.
- The planning process is systematic and integrated with all other planning processes and operations, including the impact review process.
- An effective planning process requires the active participation of the Governments of Canada and Nunavut as well as Nunavik Inuit.
