Our values are also the qualities or standards that the NMRPC holds itself to. Defining these is part of the ongoing work of the NMRPC and will be guided by the principles set out in the NILCA. Those Principles can be summarized as follows:
The current and future well-being of Nunavik Inuit must be promoted and protected.
Culture, language, traditions, places of importance and the uniqueness of the communities adjacent to the NMR are of great value.
Humans are a valued ecosystem component.
The animals, marine plants, islands, channels, airsheds, headlands, bays, beaches, offshore and every other feature of the Nunavik Marine Region are valued.
The current and future integrity of ecosystems within the NMR must be protected and, where possible, restored.
Requiring hazardous waste sites to be identified and cleaned up is a priority of the NMRPC.
Sustainable economic development, sustainable traditional economies, alternative energy and eco-friendly practices are valued and provided for.
The NMRPC values finding ways to make its own operations more ecofriendly and will consider the environment in all plans and activities.
Economic opportunities and needs contribute to the wellbeing of Nunavik Inuit.
Infrastructure, including transportation and communication, contribute to the well-being of Nunavik Inuit.
A healthy economy not only meets, but exceeds, the basic needs of Nunavik Inuit (housing, healthcare, social services).
Residents, users of the NMR and Planning Partners are valued, respected, included and engaged in the planning process, implementation of the plan, validation of results and the measuring of success; they are entitled to inclusive, realistic, transparent and accountable delivery of the NMRPC mandate.
The NMRPC should always consider risks, unintended consequences and what it can do to minimize or eliminate harm to Nunavimmiut.
